Feb 28, 2025
When visiting San Diego, there are numerous interesting things to do. However, if one is curious about recent naval history, life on board a massive ship, or the outstanding engineers involved in designing and operating an aircraft carrier and the aircraft it carries, we believe this museum is a "must-see" attraction. So we spent a day touring the USS Midway.
The USS Midway Museum opened in 2004 to preserve America's longest-serving aircraft carrier, which operated from 1945 to 1992. The museum has meticulously restored and continues to maintain most of the carrier's lower decks, island, flight deck, and hangar deck, providing visitors with an educational glimpse into life and work aboard a Navy carrier. The museum's mission is to preserve the history of naval aviation while offering educational experiences for visitors of all ages. It has become one of the world's most popular naval ship museums. The USS Midway was commissioned in 1945 as the largest ship in the world and measures 1,001 feet long. The carrier typically housed 4,500 crew members and was powered by four steam turbines, which collectively generated 212,000 horsepower.
