Main Propulsion Control

(Click on Picture to Bring Up Full Image)

The Propulsion Control Room (PCR) was the central hub for Engine Operations. It was the nerve center for monitoring and controlling the ship's steam propulsion system. Steam pressure typically exceeded 600 psi, so careful modulation was vital to prevent system damage. Operators adjusted the steam flow to the turbines based on orders from the bridge and monitored the Steam System Health, e.g., Monitoring pressure, temperature, and flow gauges. The PCR also coordinated load balancing and synchronization of the four individual turbine shafts and was responsible for communication between the bridge, engine rooms, and fire rooms. Analog gauges and manual logs were standard. Midway never transitioned to digital automation.
