Machine Shop

(Click on Picture to Bring Up Full Image)

This photo shows the machine shop aboard the USS Midway, a critical support space for maintaining the ship's operational readiness. The machine shop was staffed by skilled machinist mates responsible for fabricating, repairing, or modifying mechanical components on demand. Personnel could machine replacement parts for systems ranging from propulsion to weapons using heavy-duty equipment such as engine lathes, milling machines, drill presses, and grinders. This capability allowed the ship to remain self-sufficient during extended deployments.

In addition to the main machine shop, the Midway included other specialized maintenance and fabrication rooms, such as sheet metal shops, pipe and valve repair shops, and electronics repair labs. This setup ensured the rapid restoration of critical equipment in the event of combat damage or routine wear.
