The B-29 Superfortress on display in this photo is the infamous Enola Gay, the aircraft that dropped the atomic bomb on Hiroshima, Japan, on August 6, 1945, during World War II.
The aircraft is partially restored and showcases its original configuration. It was transferred to the Smithsonian in 1949 and underwent significant restoration efforts. The museum carefully preserves the plane as a critical piece of world history, presenting it to educate visitors about the final stages of World War II and the atomic age.
