Pennsylvania Power & Light (PP&L) Fireless Locomotive "D" is a fireless steam locomotive with a 0-6-0 wheel arrangement that was built for industrial switching duties in environments where open flames posed a safety hazard, such as around power plants, chemical plants, or textile mills. Unlike conventional steam locomotives, this engine stored pressurized steam (up to 300PSI) in a heavily insulated tank charged from a stationary boiler. It used this stored steam to operate for several hours without producing smoke, ash, or sparks.
