The Apollo Command Module served as the crew compartment and reentry vehicle for NASA's Apollo lunar program. North American Aviation developed the spacecraft in the early 1960s under contract with NASA. The first crewed Command Module flew on Apollo 7 in October 1968. The spacecraft carried three astronauts during their transit to and from the Moon. A total of fifteen Command Modules operated on crewed missions between 1968 and 1975, with the final mission being the Apollo-Soyuz Test Project in July 1975.

The Command Module measured 11 feet in height and 13 feet in diameter at its base. It weighed approximately 13,000 pounds when loaded for flight. The spacecraft featured a heat shield capable of withstanding reentry temperatures of 5,000°F after lunar return missions.
