Yet another Red Caboose

(Click on Picture to Bring Up Full Image)

While I'm unsure of the exact model, the design of this caboose suggests it may be an ex-Santa Fe or Burlington Northern caboose, later repainted and relettered for museum use. This caboose is a steel bay window model, which became common in the mid-20th century as an alternative to the older cupola design. The bay window style improved crew safety by eliminating the need to climb into a raised cupola, while still providing lateral visibility for monitoring train conditions. These cabooses were typically used from the 1950s through the 1980s for crew shelter, brake operation, and as a vantage point for observing the train.
