Piston-Powered Workhorse: It was powered by a Wright R-1820-84 radial engine—unusual by today's standards but standard at the time—delivering around 1,525 horsepower.
Distinctive Nose-Mounted Engine: The radial engine was placed in the nose, not above the fuselage like modern turbine helicopters, which gave it a very recognizable profile and a large, flat cargo bay.
Capacity: Could carry 12–16 fully equipped troops, or eight stretchers and two medics for medevac missions.
Entered service: Mid-1950s
Primary role: Utility transport helicopter for troop transport, medevac, cargo, and anti-submarine warfare (ASW), search and rescue (SAR)
Heavily used by the U.S. Marine Corps in Vietnam, often for troop insertion/extraction and rescue missions under fire. Nicknamed "Huss" or "Dog" by troops.
