The Junkers Ju 52/3m was a German tri-motor transport aircraft that first flew in 1930. Originally designed as a single-engine airliner, Junkers added two wing-mounted engines to create the three-engine variant that became the standard configuration. The aircraft entered commercial service in 1932 and quickly became a workhorse for airlines around the globe. During World War II, the Luftwaffe adopted the Ju 52/3m as its primary transport aircraft, utilizing it for cargo, troop transport, and airborne operations.
The Ju 52/3m was powered by three BMW 132 radial engines, each producing 725 horsepower, allowing it to reach a maximum speed of 190 mph and a range of 870 miles. The aircraft could carry up to 17 passengers and had a maximum payload of 4,400 pounds. Its corrugated metal construction provided structural strength while keeping weight manageable. Over 4,800 units were produced.
