Pennsylvania Railroad H34a covered hopper freight car, 70-ton two-bay design marked with yellow S for Stores Department

Class: H34a

Built: 1955

Manufacturer: Pennsylvania Railroad, Altoona, Pennsylvania

Retired: c. 1999

The Pennsylvania Railroad's covered hopper car was constructed at the PRR's Altoona Shops using components from Pullman-Standard. The H34a featured a 70-ton capacity and a 2-bay configuration, suitable for transporting dense materials such as cement, sand, and aggregates. Its design was based on the Pullman-Standard PS-2 model, incorporating a riveted steel body and center-discharge hoppers. The PRR assembled 400 units in-house, while Pullman-Standard produced an additional 300 cars at their Butler, Pennsylvania, facility.

The H34a's standardized design facilitated integration into the PRR's extensive freight operations. Notably, some H34a cars were later marked with a yellow "S" (as shown in the photo) to indicate their assignment to the railroad's Stores Department, and were used to haul locomotive sand to various terminals.
