The PRR #2846 is a 2-8-0 “Consolidation”-type steam locomotive built by Baldwin Locomotive Works for the Pennsylvania Railroad. It was designed for medium-duty freight operations, particularly suited to branch lines, yards, and local transfer runs. The “sb” subclass indicates it was upgraded with a superheater between the boiler and piston valves, increasing efficiency. #2846 also had a power reverse lever on the engineer’s side; and a rare pipe from the steam dome to the pilot wheels.
With approximately a total of 2900 locomotives built in the H6 series, it was one of PRR’s most numerous freight classes. The H6sb offered a balance of durability, maintainability, and reliable low-speed power, making it a core component of PRR’s early 20th-century freight operations.
