The Heinkel He 219 Uhu (Eagle Owl) was a German twin-engine night fighter developed during World War II under Ernst Heinkel's company. It was one of the most advanced aircraft of its type during the war. The aircraft was specifically designed as a purpose-built night fighter, incorporating cutting-edge technology, including radar equipment, ejection seats (among the first operational aircraft to feature them), and tricycle landing gear. Despite its promising design, the He 219 faced significant delays and production challenges due to competing priorities within the German aviation industry and resistance from some Luftwaffe officials who favored other aircraft designs.
The He 219 was powered by two Daimler-Benz DB 603 engines, each producing approximately 1,750 horsepower, which gave it a top speed of around 416 mph and a service ceiling of 41,660 feet. Its armament typically consisted of multiple cannons, including 20mm and 30mm weapons. Only about 300 He 219s were produced due to wartime constraints; however, the aircraft demonstrated remarkable success rates against Allied night bombers.
