The E-6 incorporated advanced features, such as a large superheated boiler, piston valves, and efficient steam distribution. The E-6 could sustain high speeds while maintaining efficiency. A total of 83 units were built between 1910 and 1914.

Locomotive #460, dubbed the "Lindbergh Engine," famously raced newsreel film from Washington, D.C., to New York in 1927, becoming the most well-known of the class.
