Enlisted Men's Racks
(Click on Picture to Bring Up Full Image)

Enlisted men's racks were compact, three-tiered "coffin racks" with minimal amenities: a thin mattress, a privacy curtain, a small reading light, and a shallow locker underneath for limited personal storage. Berthing compartments were densely packed, often holding over 100 sailors in confined spaces with narrow aisles.
Space limitations led to "hot racking," where sailors on alternating shifts shared the same bed. Berthing areas were usually located near duty stations to allow quick response during emergencies. Despite austere conditions, sailors often personalized their small sleeping spaces with photos or decorated curtains, as this was their only private area while underway.
