Might Be PRR No. 7688

This engine is shown sitting outdoors in the museam's yard.  This yard contained may more locomatives and cars, most either in need of refurbishment, or undergoing referbishment.  This engine in ths photo appears to be partially referbished, so there are not marking to identify it, but I think it is the following model:


Class: H10

Built: 1915

Manufacturer: Lima Locomotive at Lima, OH

Retired: 1957


Pennsylvania Railroad No. 7688, H10s Consolidation-type steam locomotive.


Wheel arrangement: 2-8-0 (Consolidation)

  • Primary use: Medium-duty freight service, especially on PRR’s Lines West

  • Large air pump on the smokebox front (standard for freight engines)

  • Sloped coal board tender (increased coal capacity)

  • Walschaerts valve gear

  • Steam dome and sand dome typical of PRR practice
