No. 700 is a 4-8-4 “Northern” type steam locomotive built by Baldwin Locomotive Works in 1938 for fast passenger and freight service along the SP&S mainline between Portland and Spokane. Weighing over 470,000 pounds, it was one of the largest steam locomotives in the Pacific Northwest and shared design lineage with Northern Pacific’s A-2 class. No. 700 remained in active service until the mid-1950s, when diesels replaced steam on the SP&S. It is now one of only three surviving 4-8-4s built by Baldwin, restored to operating condition.
